Meet Shirley, a gentle soul with a quiet spirit who is still learning what it means to be a dog. You might wonder why a dog her age is just now figuring life out—Shirley’s story is bittersweet. She came from a breeder facility, never sold, likely kept behind for breeding. In the process, she missed out on so much that shapes a happy dog’s early years: playful romps, loving snuggles, and the joy of being someone’s cherished companion. For Shirley, life was reduced to a number—#90—a cold tattoo in her ear that marked her existence.

But Shirley’s story doesn’t end there. Now, she has a chance to rewrite her narrative with a patient, understanding family who will help her discover what love and life can truly be. That said, Shirley’s journey requires a special home with thoughtful accommodations:

1. Adults only, please. Shirley has shown she’s uneasy around younger teens, possibly due to their movements or energy. She thrives with calm, gentle adults who can earn her trust.

2. A calm canine companion. While Shirley occasionally picks up a toy and dashes around, she’s not big on roughhousing. A mellow older dog to cuddle with would suit her best.

3. Stair-free or limited stair living. Stairs are a challenge for Shirley—she tries but often flops or tumbles. For her safety, she’ll need to be carried if stairs are unavoidable. She is carried daily up and down stairs at her current home.

4. A secure fenced yard. Shirley struggles with leash walking and needs the freedom to explore at her own pace. She’s also cautious with new people, preferring to trust her person before allowing herself to be picked up.

5. Patience with potty training. Shirley is making progress but isn’t fully trained yet, often having daily accidents. She benefits from frequent outdoor trips and lots of praise—she’s not treat motivated but blossoms when told she’s beautiful and loved.

Shirley is not an easy dog, but she is worth every moment of patience and understanding. She’s safe in her foster home, learning what it feels like to be cared for, and waiting for that special someone who will help her blossom.
